    Menashe Kadishman  (
    August 21, 1932 -May 8, 2015)
was an Israeli sculptor, painter, and graphic artist best known for his large-scale metal sculptures and colorful paintings of sheep.
Born on August 21, 1932 in Tel Aviv, Israel, he studied under Moshe Sternschuss at the Avni Institute of Art and Design in Tel Aviv before moving to London in 1959, where he studied at St. Martin?s School of Art and the Slade School of Art.
Kadishman?s youth as a shepherd at a kibbutz inspired the sheep motif found throughout his work. ?I don't paint merchandise. I create and see things,? he once mused. ?I need to be moved every day all over again?both by the sheep, and by the tree outside my window. Every single day is a revelation.?
The artist?s work from immediately after art school in London was heavily indebted to the aesthetics of Minimalist sculpture. He has also cited Henry Moore as one of his biggest influences. Kadishman died on May 8, 2015 in Ramat Gan, Israel. Today, his works are in the collections of the Storm King Art Center in Mountainville, NY, the Jewish Museum in New York, the Nasher Sculpture Center in Dallas, and the Tel Aviv Museum of Art, among others.
